Firewalls

There are 2 kinds of firewall protection - hardware and software:
Hardware - In the home environment, hardware firewall protection is usually done by a router. Although this is not totally secure, a router is a good first line of defense. Home routers are inexpensive and generally have some level of firewall protection out-of-box.
Software - Software firewalls are more common and sometimes come pre-installed on new computers. * Configuration of firewall software can sometimes be complicated and confusing. Please follow the manufacturer's instructions and contact them for support.

Note: Incorrect configuration can block your access to the internet. Windows XP comes with a built-in firewall. Contact Microsoft for support on this firewall.
